What are your copyright standards and does the photographer retain all rights in photo contests?

Hi Lucy, I am not with National Geographic. I am a photographer who blog posts competition information, grants, and jobs I come across.

Personally, I register my photographs with the copyright office using their online service FIRST.

With regards to contests, each of them are different, so it is important you read the terms and conditions for each one you decide to enter. For example, recently I entered a contest. Their particular terms and conditions state clearly, that I retain the copyright to my photograph, but if I place in any of the top spots, I give licensing permissions for X amount of time. This means, I (hypothetically) would win the cash prize, retain my copyright, but they can use or sell the image for X amount of time, as agreed upon my entering the competition. I would not receive any other financial benefit from the use of the photograph for the allocated agreed time of usage, with the exception of one clean prize amount.

Other competitions simple, you retain copyright, usage, etc. But their are some other instances where you give your rights away…….even if you hold the copyright. This means, regardless of you having the copyright, they can use the photograph without any compensation to you, ever.

Simply, it is important to read the “Terms and Conditions” carefully for each contest before you move forward. This protects you from any surprises.

You own your image, but the permissions you grant for usage, varies per contest.

I hope you find this helpful. Thank you for visiting.
